The rookie held on with some stunning pace in his home race. As the gap finally began to grow, Rossi pulled the pin from third to overtake the Frenchman and go on the charge. Close in he did, before the final stroke of drama for the day suddenly found the nine-time World Champion sliding out, watching his teammate disappear into the distance. Marquez looked set to challenge for a podium finish when he crashed out in turn 2. Home hero Zarco kept it calm under the huge pressures of the incredible home crowd to then cross the line in second behind the factory Yamaha drama — with Dani Pedrosa Repsol Honda Team completing the podium after an awesome slice through the field. Pedrosa began the race in P13, was seventh after the first few laps and then pushed his way past Andrea Dovizioso Ducati Team and Cal Crutchlow LCR Honda to set off after the frontrunners — closing in on Marquez before watching his teammate slide out.
In the early laps, he was pushed back into second by on-form satellite-team Ducati rider Jack Miller, who had also started from the front row of the grid. Miller succumbed again after two laps in the lead, but it took factory Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso until lap 17 before he could get past the younger rider. He crashed out, spoiling a run of top-ten finishes. He had gradually outpaced satellite Petronas Yamaha rider Franco Morbidelli; but it was the second Petronas rider who rewarded the home crowd with an excellent ride. A bad first lap left new fast Frenchman Fabio Quartararo down in 15th, but he set fastest lap of the race as he forged through to an eventual eighth. Maverick Vinales Monster Yamaha was one of the big losers.
What had been a three-way race for honours between the two factory Yamaha riders and the Tech 3 bike of Johann Zarco had boiled down to a straight fight between Vinales and Rossi in the closing stages. It was home hero Zarco, running soft tyres front and rear, that led the opening stages after a great start from third on the grid, with Vinales slotting into second place ahead of Rossi. But Zarco was unable to pull away from the factory Yamahas, both running medium tyres all round, and on lap 7 the Frenchman was passed by Vinales at the Dunlop chicane. From there, Vinales maintained a small advantage over Zarco and Rossi, with the satellite rider holding on to second until Rossi made his move at the Dunlop chicane on the 23rd lap of The Italian's charge continued as he reeled in Vinales and passed him at the same location three laps later.

In doing so he also took back the Championship lead, and in terms of race wins and track records, Marquez has a solid CV at Le Mans — as is becoming true everywhere — and the reigning Champion will be gunning for his third premier class victory at the venue. So, on Monday, he smashed his new lap record in testing by half a second. The Frenchman is fast and his home crowd will be behind him every lap — at a track where Yamaha have often reigned. A tale of two sides for the young Frenchman at the Spanish GP, but he was fastest in testing. How does he feel on reflection?
Maverick Vinales has won a thrilling French MotoGP at Le Mans after team-mate and leader Valentino Rossi ran wide on the last lap, then fell while trying to close back in on the Spaniard.
