what to do in torcello

So, if you’ve purchased the ACTV hour vaporetto pass and made the trip across the lagoon to Burano, we suggest continuing on to Torcello. These sites are the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Church of Santa Fosca, and the Museo di Torcello; reminders of a time when.

Read my story about how to decide a h otel outside Venice or in the city center? A reward for those who visit this laid-back island. So are you ready for it? I found a nice vaporetto boat trip from Venice to these islands. Arriving in Torcello, you have to walk along the canal from the landing platform. It felt like entering a nature park.

Murano, being closest to Venice, is usually almost as crowded as Venice herself especially in the busy summer season. Burano, being a bit further away, is a safer bet — but the island is famous for its colorful buildings and lace-making traditions, so it even draws a fair number of tourists from the main island. The island of Torcello , on the other hand, is almost always blissfully quiet. These days there are probably fewer than 20 people who actually live on the island, which is primarily a nature reserve now, but at one point it was where most of the citizens of the Republic of Venice actually lived. That was back in the 5th century. By the 10th century, the population had swelled to around 10, people and Torcello was an important island city. Most of the buildings were dismantled long ago, but there are still worthwhile sights on Torcello.

Torcello is the most intriguing and the most atmospheric of the islands in the Venetian lagoon. Up in the northern lagoon, choked with mud flats and marshes, this silent island was once a busy and important town. Torcello, combined with its neighbouring island Burano, makes a great trip from Venice more about transport to Torcello. Nowadays so different to glamorous Venice, their history is nevertheless shared. Torcello was first settled by the inhabitants of Altino Altinum , a once-important Roman town. Led by their bishop, they fled successive invasions which laid waste their mainland homes, and built their new town on this island. Over the years, however, Venice grew more important while Torcello found its waterways silting up and its swamps malarial.

Burano, Murano, Torcello 3 Island Tour

A visit to Burano is often associated with Murano, but I recommend to combine it with Mazzorbo and Torcello instead. This will give you a wider perspective of the beauty and variety of the lagoon islands. I suggest to start your day trip at Torcello , before moving further to Mazzorbo and finally Burano. Torcello is ideal for escaping the hustle and bustle of Venice for a couple of hours. Take your time to walk between the fields and vineyards, to visit the museum and the cathedral and to climb the campanile.
