We ended up with a three-up sprint almost, with Ewan finally getting his stage win, beating Gaviria and Bennett in the process. Nothing much else to talk about as the day was a typically dull transition stage. Hopefully things are slightly more exciting tomorrow. With almost 80km of flat roads, the fight for the breakaway could be pretty intense. Well, it normally would, but this Giro has been different in that regard so who knows.

Giro d’Italia 2017 – Stage 8 Preview
After a challenging couple of days, Tom Dumoulin laid his hands on the most important maglia rosa of the Giro d'Italia, the final one. Dumoulin put in a superb effort in the final time trial from Monza to Milan, to take second place on the stage and make up more than enough time to climb above Nairo Quintana in the overall standings. Dumoulin beat the Colombian by just 31 seconds with Vincenzo Nibali finishing third overall. An emotional Jos van Emden made it a doubly good day for the Dutch with the stage victory, just ahead of Dumoulin. The Grande Partenza will set things off in Sardinia on May 5 in Alghero with a lengthy km road race to Olbia and overall winner will be crowned three weeks later upon its conclusion following a flat 28km time trial to Milan on May The route will showcase some of the most famous mountain passes used in the history of the Italian Grand Tour with climbs that include Blockhaus, Mortirolo, Stelvio, Umbrail Pass, Monte Grappa and Pordoi, to name a few. Giro d'Italia start list.
Ever since the Giro d'Italia caravan crossed the Strait of Messina and reached the Italian mainland on Tuesday afternoon, the ascent of the Blockhaus on stage 9 has seemed to obliterate all else on the horizon. In the start village each day, the men with designs on the maglia rosa are sounded out for their opinions of the climb. On television and radio, ex-pros talk about how the Giro will really start in the Apennines. Despite the torpor that characterised much of Friday's long trudge from Castrovillari to Alberobello, it would be mistaken to assume that the Giro is simply slouching towards the Blockhaus. The GC contenders were certainly alive to the danger when the peloton broke up in the rapid closing kilometres of stage 7, and they are aware, too, that further frissons await when the Giro visits the scenic Gargano Peninsula — if Puglia is the heel of Italy's boot, then this is its spur — on stage 8 from Molfetta to Peschici. It is the quintessential stage of two halves. The opening 85 kilometres along the coast north of Bari are pancake flat, but the race takes on a rather different guise once it reaches Manfredonia, the gateway to the peninsula.

Giro 2017 Route stage 8: Molfetta - Peschici
Another day, another section of the beautiful Italian coastline. This stage is certainly one that will interest quite a few of the peloton. It is too hard for most of the sprinters, but not hard enough for the GC riders. Coming the day before a huge GC day, opens the door to many riders. The cat 2 climb comes after 80km and is tough, 9. Once it has been crested, we have around 90km to go.
