You don't need much gear for hunting Starlings with airguns. Just a rifle and some pellets, though I like to a rangefinder for accuracy on long.

This airgun article on hunting pests with spring powered air rifles was written by Randy Mitchell. The author of the following review is in no way affiliated with Airgun Depot. The views expressed below are personal opinion only. Air Rifles are bought for a variety of reasons. Many folks want to punch holes in paper, others want to hunt small game with an airgun. There are Olympic competitions that many aspire to, and I would lay good money down that many firearms enthusiasts got their start with an airgun. But sooner or later, either the actual owner of the airgun , or perhaps their spouse, is going to demand that the air rifle be put to a very useful purpose.

It is probably safe to say that most of the Airguns that are purchased domestically would be for plinking and target shooting. But the guns purchased expressly for harvesting animals, are most frequently used to shoot vermin and pest species. This can range from shooting the squirrel or starling raiding the backyard bird feeder to professional pest control removal of roosting pigeons or rats in an agricultural setting. Most states permit the culling of pest species with an airgun, and many will allow some game animals to be taken out of season under a depredation permit when they are causing damage to property. There can be a thin line between pest and game animals which is often situational. Some species by their very nature are considered pest animals across the board, ones that are vectors for diseases or cause damage to property such as brown rats.

European starlings are one of those pest species, like brown rats and pigeons that are scattered all over the world displacing indigenous species. Starlings are probably one of the worst, in that they are so aggressive, adaptable, and prolific breeders. And Asia; and everywhere they go the local populations of songbirds drop. This is a species that outside of Europe should be SOS shot on sight. This is a perfect target for a mid power.

His videos are outstanding. If you hate Starlings and HS as much as I do, you'll appreciate the videos he shoots of actual airgun kills. In this video, he has some amazing footage of what a starling is capable of doing before he exterminates her.
